Everyday objects become abstract symbols that enable a sort of time travel

Outdated Kodak 160T tungsten slide film shot in a Holga and cross-processed in C-41 chemistry.

As an experiment I’m using a different WordPress gallery plugin called NextGEN, instead of the WP-Simpleviewer galleries I’ve been using for the last year. The NextGEN galleries are not Flash based like Simpleviewer, so they’re more accessible for folks using mobile devices or old browsers. Let me know what you think!

Update:
When moving my site to a new server, I didn’t re-install NextGen.

It works well. However the appearing and disappearing of the popup window for each picture is distracting and breaks the feel of the sequence. Isn’t there some option to keep the popup open while changing the image ?

    2. Brad:

Agree that the jump between images is very distracting. Too bad the frame couldn’t remain up and then have a simple and quick fade between images.

Yeah, I’ve been looking for something else beyond Simpleviewer galleries as well for the same reasons. Tried Slimbox, but the animation/theatrics were similarly distracting. Lately, for sets of images, I’ve been putting up a single static image, with a Simpleviewer gallery that opens in another window when the image is clicked. While that still doesn’t address the no-Flash on mobile devices issue, it does make main page loading a little zippier. And it’s generated totally in LR, rather than futzing with the WordPress SV pluggin. Also lets me put up larger images.

      Very cool photos, BTW!

      Hi Joe –

I like the new viewer better than the old one, because I could never get the old one to work. I always had to look at the shots individually. The new viewer is kind of slow, but at least it works.

Thanks for running this blog. I read it every morning with my coffee.

Mauro – thanks for the feedback. After some more experimenting with the options, I’m not really happy with how NextGEN works.

Brad – thanks. Always happy to hear about solutions that are quick to build and look good – will take a look at your site.

Germaine – thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoy the blog!

Your post remind me to an ad I saw recently on a telephone pole : http://jejuneinstitute.org/timecamera.htm

I agree with Germaine the next gen plugin seems a bit pokier (could be my connection) — I like the bigger images though!!

      Joe,

Have to admit that I prefer the Simpleviewer galleries as well. Partly for the text captions that you always include. I enjoy your wry comments. The new viewer works okay, but I concur that the reload is distracting.

Is this series from around Hawaii or back in Berkley?

    7. joe:

David – excellent link and thanks for the feedback.

Kent – Based on this test I’m going back to Simpleviewer. This series is from a roll I shot before and after the Hawaii trip, mostly after.
