The distinctive columns of the New Industries Building on Alcatraz, with the city lights of San Francisco glowing through the window. The interior of the space was completely dark. A flashlight was used to light paint the room at an oblique angle to emphasize the wall texture and bring out the strong forms of the columns. The ranger for our private night tour explained the psychological aspect of being a prisoner at Alcatraz -- any time you looked out the window, the world on the outside was right there staring back at you.
